Leadership Development Course Case Study

Designed for Success: An Insight into the Impactful Leadership Program at NZ Panels

Positive People was fortunate to be asked by NZ Panels to deliver a Leadership Development course. Nicola Robertson, one of our experienced consultants, had discussions with their HR Manager and conducted an analysis of their needs. She designed a six-month course broken into one in-person session a month and one follow-up virtual call.

Course Design and Topics

The course was structured to address the primary needs of the participants, ensuring a comprehensive coverage of essential leadership skills. The topics covered included:

Interactive and Collaborative Learning

Positive People designed the sessions to be fun and interactive, including plenty of time to discuss current work and management issues. Having leaders from across the company created a space for cross-department collaboration, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. This environment encouraged participants to share their experiences and perspectives, enriching the learning process for everyone involved.

With a crisis looming in the industry we were contacted to  discuss how we might go about conducting a restructure and change management program in a long established company operating in a traditional  industry.

Having to tread extremely carefully we set about this complex project by scoping out the total project and then meticulously planning how to conduct each step to conduct this program to best practice standards, which was the MD’s instruction. The organisation structure was rejigged, the job descriptions were changed and new job descriptions drafted, the selection criteria for the new roles were established, interviews were structured and conducted, and group and individual meetings arranged. Our whole team was involved in the project at some point. It was a big undertaking and we were able to conclude the process with the Company’s reputation in tact with the individuals, both departed and remaining, feeling that a fair and reasonable process had been conducted. The business was set up with a streamlined structure and populated by the best people for the jobs, giving it the best chance of success.

Since that project we have continued as HR partners and have been involved in recruitment initiatives as well as providing policy advice and assistance.

We were first contacted by this medium sized business of 30 staff about 20 years ago. They needed some assistance with an employment relations matter. This assistance lead to us introducing a Disciplinary Procedure and Performance Appraisal process into the business and then conducting the training for their key managers on these performance management tools.

We stayed in touch and caught up on a number of HR related matters over the years. Having built the relationship based on mutual respect and trust, and working increasingly as their HR business partner, we were ready to jump to their aid and help them with a major recruitment drive in their factory. Conducting a streamlined recruitment process we ensured that they were able to employ the right people at the right time in this phased process. A year later we were also on hand to assist them with the second wave of recruitment that arrived with their further expansion.

With their rapid growth, which we had been part of over the years, we were well positioned to understand their business, culture and management style, and assist with the most appropriate interventions to best manage the HR aspects of their growth. Linked to this was the need to train and develop the people employed and to ensure that the on-floor leadership were confident and competent in leading their teams. The leadership training program introduced consisted of a set of leadership modules covering Communication, Problem Solving, Motivation, Time Management and Dealing with Conflict. This practical and experientially based training allowed the participants to grow in confidence as they learned how to manage their teams to achieve best results. This outcome based approach to leadership training proved to be a winner.

The partnership is now based on our regular bi-weekly presence within their business where all aspects of HR support are provided to the on-site HR Adviser as well as providing HR leadership and strategic input to what is now a business verging on the large.

It has been an amazing 20 years where we feel we have made a meaningful HR contribution to their business development and growth. We are proud to have been associated with their growth and success.

Operating in the fast -paced IT environment, we have been working with this medium-sized business for the last 3 years. Experiencing the complexities of managing individuals and teams spread far and wide across the globe has proved a challenge. Focusing on job descriptions and performance management systems, we have been working with them to establish expectations and standards of performance. We have been involved with employment relations interventions along the way.

We have also assisted with their recruitment initiatives, introducing solid and proven recruitment and selection systems into their business.

With a regular fortnightly presence in their offices we are able to assist with all practical HR related work involved in running a medium-sized operation.

Growing at a pace, this initially small business called us in to help them about 5 years ago to assist them with their employment agreements. Over the years we have stood with them and helped them develop an appropriate remuneration system for the team, as well as providing modular leadership training for their middle management.

Having grown to a medium sized business, we now have a regular fortnightly presence at their offices. We are able to ensure that day-to-day HR operational matters are attended to, Performance Reviews are conducted to schedule, as well as assisting with employment relations matters that invariably arise in the workplace. We are their HR business partner.
