Building HR Capability and Giving Leaders Back Time
TMCo is a New Zealand–owned, multidisciplinary engineering consultancy delivering structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, civil, fire, and sustainability services across Aotearoa and Australia. With 80 staff and 10 offices, the business was growing and evolving, creating a need for greater structure and capability across its people practices.
The Challenge
As the team grew, TMCo identified the need for a greater level of HR documentation, employment processes and people practices. The business needed access to experienced HR expertise without the cost and commitment of establishing a full-time internal HR function.
The Approach
TMCo engaged Positive People to provide outsourced HR support, with practical, hands-on HR support to the Director who has responsibility for People and Culture.
Working closely with the Director, the consultant:
- Strengthened HR documentation, employment processes and policies.
- Introduced a consistent annual performance management process.
- Supported the transition to a common annual remuneration review date.
- Designed and ran employee engagement surveys and supported follow-up actions.
- Provided confidential support to employees and met individually with team members where appropriate.
- Provided coaching, advice and training to team leaders to strengthen their people leadership capability.
- Provided advice and support on the selection and implementation of a new HRIS.
- Acted as a trusted sounding board for senior managers navigating people-related decisions and challenges.
The Impact
The partnership provided TMCo with access to experienced HR expertise while allowing the Directors to focus more time on their core business responsibilities.
The engagement resulted in:
- Greater HR structure and consistency through clearer processes, documentation, and annual planning.
- More effective performance management through the introduction of a consistent annual performance process.
- Stronger employee engagement, with employees having access to an independent and trusted HR resource.
- Increased leadership capability, through coaching, development, and practical support for managers.
- Greater confidence in people decisions, with senior leaders having an experienced HR professional available as a confidential sounding board.
